Sprayed and injected Polyurethane foams are ideal systems for all kinds of marine insulation applications. Their low 'K' factor (0.02 W/mK) means that lower thicknesses are required, giving space savings. As the material is closed-cell it will not absorb water, and bonds directly to the substrate in a continuous membrane, thus leaving no voids or joints for condensation or cold bridging. The unique lightweight nature and buoyancy of the materials have obvious benefits for marine vessels. So, besides having the most thermal efficient properties in itself, it contains these added energy saving advantages.

Polyurethane spray foam marine insulation is applied to surfaces in a liquid form, and then expands within seconds to the required thickness, setting rapidly into a rigid foam form.

Insulation effectiveness is measured and judged in terms of 'u' values. Polyurethane spray foam marine insulation has extremely good 'u'values or thermal efficiency. A good illustration is to compare PU foam to Rockwool, where almost three times the thickness of 'Rockwool' would be needed, compared to foam to achieve an equivalent 'u'value. Foam marine insulation is an obvious choice for confined areas, as is usual on most boats.

Marine foam insulation systems are available with the following approvals:

Class 1 Fire Rating to BS 476 pt7 (Class 'O' variations also available).

SOLAS (Saving Life at Sea) approval for life saving devices.
IMO (International Marine Organisation) Resolution A689

MAS (Marine Safety Agency) certified Lloyds Register type approval
Norske Veritas approved

BUFCA Members will be able to help with recommending systems and treatments for any potential marine insulation applications.

Other benefits associated with spray foam marine insulation are as follow:

-Reduces temperature extremes, i.e. it helps to prevent environments being too hot or too cold.
-Reduces noise and vibrations, such as those given off by engines.
-Prevents Condensation.
-Is very long lasting, and could outlive the boat.
-'Works' immediately.
-The closed cell structure (waterproof qualities) means that it performs in damp atmospheres.
-Does not get damp rotten and smelly if it is exposed to water.
-Is compatible with electric wiring, there is no adverse reaction, unlike Polystyrene.
-Is compatible with electrical wiring.

The combined effect of all these factors and benefits make it an increasingly popular choice generally for marine insulation, especially in relation to the current concerns over climate change, energy saving strategies, frequent fuel crises and price rises.

The application of PU foam marine insulation is definitely not recommended to the amateur. It is only really successfully applied and gauged by skilled engineers.

By choosing Websters Insulation Ltd, to insulate your boat, you will gain the added advantages associated with a long established firm, who pride themselves in being a Yorkshire based organisation, offering quality of service and workmanship, at very competitive prices.

Websters Insulation Ltd have been offering marine insulation for over ten years and the company itself is a UK market leader, and has been going for over twenty years. It specialises in the application of spray foam insulation for all kinds of structures and buildings, i.e. industrial, commercial, domestic and agricultural. Spray foam insulation is a suitable insulating material for almost any requirement. The Webtherm System is the only method approved by Websters, due to the fact that the continuous membrane will adhere to most surfaces, and contains the moist efficient insulating properties.

It was recognised that thermal insulation can play a key role in the cost effective reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in Europe and save up to 350 MILLION TONNES per annum by 2010

*Websters Insulation ltd are approved by British Waterways.
All materials for
marine insulation adhere to a minimum of 'BS476 part 7, class one' fire regulations.
